What is psychology to you ?

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. One thing
that can effect a person's behavior or their ability to process feelings and information are
substances like drug and alcohol. an peer reviewed article that focuses specifically on the
psychological effects of drugs and alcohol on a person "Risk and Protective Factors for
Alcohol and Other Drug Problems in Adolescence and Early Adulthood: Implications for
Substance Abuse Prevention "(David Hawkins, Richard F. Catalano,Janet Y. Miller)
This article highlights factors both personal and environmental that lead adolescence to drugs
and alcohol as well as the risk they take in doing so.
Studies within the article show that a leading cause of adolescent drug use stems from the kind of upbringing life the adolescent had for example (Baumrind, 1983) Why adolescents take chances—And why they don't Paper presented at the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, Bethesda, MD) shows that children of more lenient parents whom grew up in less strict environments were more likely to experiment with drugs than kids with stricter parents who provided more structure. From an emotional perspective child who received more affection and praised from their parents were also less likely to misuse drugs and alcohol then children who suffered from neglect or emotional abuse. Another environmental cause of adolescent drug and alcohol use is the types of neighborhood kids grow up in. Children of lower social status that live in poor and over populated neighborhood are more prone to the use of drugs and alcohol caused by a high crime rate and disorganization. Research within the article also shows that addiction can be a learned behavior passed on from watching parents or siblings misuse drugs and alcohol making kids more likely to pick up the same bad habits as teens. ( Coie& Dodge 1988). Multiple sources of data on social behavior and social status in the school: A cross-age comparison .Hawkins, J. D., Catalano, R. F., & Miller, J. Y. (1992). Psychological Bulletin, 112(1), 64-105. doi:10.1037/0033-2909.112.1.64)

Aside from the psychological reasons that led adolescents to the use of drugs and alcohol

the article also highlights the negative impact it has on their daily lives drugs and

alcohol impact user's behavior in such a way that they can become dropouts or even

criminals. (Hundleby,& Mercer 1987). Family and friends as social

environments and their relationship to young adolescents' use of alcohol, tobacco, and

marijuana. Hawkins, J. D., Catalano, R. F., & Miller, J. Y. (1992). Risk and protective factors for

alcohol and other drug problems in adolescence and early adulthood: Implications for substance

abuse prevention. Psychological Bulletin, 112(1), 64-105. doi:10.1037/0033-2909.112.1.64

The research method used to gather the information in this article is qualitative research design. My reason for coming to this conclusion is qualitative research is used to gather information regarding motivations, opinions, and the understandings of underlying reasons, in this case as it pertains to the use of drugs and alcohol in adolescents.
My first impression of the field of psychology was that it involves a lot more research and studies than I initially thought of. I assumed that psychology was more about feelings and emotions but now I realized it's a behavioral science and there is a lot more to it. I decided to take this class because it seems a lot more interesting than other science classes I have taken. I feel as though this class can teach me a lot about myself and people I come in contact with. I feel this class will help me in my career path because it will help me better understand what motivates people and their actions, since I want to become a nurse. I feel that me taking psychology will help me interact with patients from a diverse range of backgrounds. Psychology will help me with my social interactions and give me a better understanding of people in general. My method of studying is reading my textbook over and taking notes also because I'm a visual learner I will create visual
